3.9 Million Tons of Food Waste
A Growing Crisis

Every year, 3.9 million tons of food waste are generated in New York City alone.
The majority of this waste ends up in landfills, where it produces over
25 times more methane compared to CO2—contributing significantly to climate change.
Unfortunately, most food waste is tossed into regular trash bins,
mixed with other types of waste, making it harder to recycle or repurpose.

Our Example:

South Korea's Approach to Food Waste

In South Korea,

the methane emission factor (kg per ton of food waste) is highest for landfills at 25.71,
followed by composting at 4.00, and biogasification at 1.00. To combat methane emissions,
South Korea primarily focuses on feed production, which processes 50% of the country’s total food waste.
Other waste management methods include:

Composting: 20%

Biogasification: 14%

Incineration: 8%

Landfill: 3%

This diverse approach minimizes the environmental impact of food waste
and serves as a model for sustainable waste management.

Old Tubes Beneath NYC:

A Forgotten Network

Did you know that New York City still has a 27-mile network of pneumatic tubes lying dormant underground?

These tubes once connected post offices, police stations, and major buildings,

serving as a high-speed communication system.

So, why don’t we use these tubes anymore?

1. Maintenance Challenges: The lack of a modern monitoring system makes upkeep nearly impossible.

2. Inconsistent Design: Tubes with varying diameters prevent uniform functionality.
